Started in Cambria County in 2013, Veterans Court is a joint effort between the James E. Van Zandt (Altoona) Medical Center, trained Veteran Mentors, Veteran service organizations, and the Cambria County Court system to help provide targeted, intensive support strategies to promote behavioral health and treatment services for Veterans. If accepted into the Veterans Court Program, individuals receive intensive treatment and/or rehabilitation after arrest rather than punitive measures such as jail or prison time. Successful completion can lead to reduced charges or avoiding jail time altogether. Veterans can be referred to Veterans Court for certain non-violent offenses.
